Bond Description:there's only two valence electrons on zinc and there's six on oxygen so it's really self-explanatory.
Uses:
*in medicine, zinc oxide lozenges are a popular over the counter cold remedy, but numerous studies have failed to demonstrate any significant effect.
*zinc oxide, also called zinc white, is used as a pigment in paints.
*zinc oxide is an ingredient in the rubbermaking process.
*because it absorbs both UVA and UVB rays, zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions. it is also approved for use in sunscreens by the FDA.
Other Useful Information:
*nearly insoluble in water, but is soluble in acids and alkalis
*fumes of zinc oxide are generated when melting brass, because the melting point of brass is close to the boiling point of zinc. exposure to zinc oxide in the air (also while welding) can result in a nervous malady called metal fume fever.
